Any excuse for a cheap pop at evil lord Merkin
I hear on Radio 4 that two of the innocent youths so cruelly beaten by evil British troops are going to be hunted down by the Iraqi authorities and prosecuted for attempted murder. For throwing homemade handgrenades at British troops shortly before getting thrashed.
So, as predicted by OMR, it turns out that the British army acted responsibly and moderately. Some youths guilty of a serious crime, but probably egged on by peers & caught up in the heat of the moment, got a well deserved kicking & told not to be so stupid. British army have taught the lesson, youths have learnt, no ones lives ruined.
But thanks to the shit stirring tabloid press, & uninformed liberal do-gooders (yes, you Merkin) without the sense to listen to there elders and betters (ie. Me) these boys are now going to be hunted down & face attempted murder charges. And millions of pounds of my tax money will still be wasted in an enquirey into non existent British troop brutality.

May I also congratulate the News of the World for deliberately releasing the second half of the video footage before releasing the first half.
They managed to generate a story where none existed, destroy the lives of a couple of teenagers, seriously damage the image of the british army, wreck the careers of a couple of soldiers, waste huge sums of tax payers money for a quick profit and further increase tension between the Arab world & the west.

Old Man Rich belives that Troops do not need to follow rules of engagment, uphold the very laws that they are they to protect and belives that vengence is better than justice.
If you believe in troops thrashing youths rather than arrest and prosecute them, presumably you agree with the torture and mistreatment of 'enemy combatants' at Guantanamo Bay.

You can give a kid a belt and send them on their way. Or you can use a long and expensive justice system to ruin their lives & waste everybodies money. And I am often in favour of the former. Both by our police here or our army abroad.
Thats a rather different policy to long term imprisonment without trial in inhumane conditions.

And yes, having crap in a field in many countries in Africa (though not Gambia), much of south America and just outside Boscastle does make me older and wiser and more informed, if only about about crapping in fields. Particularly when talking to a young whippersnapper with a public toilet phobia.

If anyone is an ignorant ranter here it's you. ITN says there we're hand grenades, the video didn't show any and no other news media reported it as anything other than a load of kids with stones.
I don't count that as well informed debate OMR.
Either way, weather you believe in a swift kicking or a justice system the rules are there to be followed. They didn't follow them so I welcome any investigation into why it happened and make sure it doesn't happen again.
While we're prepared to ignore our own rules how can we expect the Iraqi people to follow them?

The rules for soldiers deployed in a combat zone when attacked with Handgrenades is to shoot and kill their attackers. I would rather our soldiers used restraint and initiative and save a life. Unlike Merk.

Never been a soldier but got many friends who are and have been and all I'll say is, you can only judge if you've been there and done that and lived that life and done those things.
Perhaps you should remember that when talking about Abu Ghraib, American poverty and countless other things then Dan. None of us can have opinion about anything we've not done. It's a new rule.

It would be hipocracy of the highest order not to prosecute those responsible, regardless of the provocation. We're 'supposed' to be better than that.

All I'm saying is that while we're all busy passing judgement on the actions of the soldiers we need to take some time to appreciate what it means to be a soldier out there in the first place; rather than supplanting our very comfy lives and their very comfy rules onto war.
